In this southernmost region of Canada over 325,000 acres of rich, fertile farmland form the agricultural heartland that has become highly valued for field vegetable processing, orchards and fruit processing, flowers, soybeans and whitebeans, dairy farming and a wine producing region covering over 1,000 acres.

On the same latitude as northern California with mild winters, and the southern influence from Lakes Erie and St. Clair, the region enjoys the longest growing season in Canada, averaging 212 days and 3,700 heat units annually.

Pioneering the development of controlled environment technology, local growers transformed the greenhouse industry into the largest in North America, with almost 1,500 acres under glass or plastic.

At the heart of this vital industry is the Greenhouse & Processing Crops Research Centre in Harrow, a centre of excellence for the development and transfer of new technologies, crop management and environmental control.
