New life for GM building? A local auto racing fanatic has plans to turn the former General Motors' 500,000-square-foot H building at Walker Road and Seminole Avenue into an automotive trade centre and exhibition space. Bill Darmon, who has been involved in local auto racing circles for decades and still harbours plans to build a racetrack in the region, is currently leasing space in the building and using some of it for his family's speciality auto business. The former factory is owned by Malik Khalid, a Torontobased investor who has more than two million square feet of commercial and industrial space across Ontario. Darmon, who has brought son Chris and daughter Jessie into the project, has leased the building through his company XcentricK Storage and Logistics and is seeking tenants. "It's a huge space and it needs some work but the possibilities are endless," said Darmon. The ceilings are 45 feet high and the 100,000-square-foot mezzanine "is large enough to allow any number of organizations to consolidate their office space in one location. There's ample parking off the south end of the building and access from Walker and Seminole," Darmon said. "It's exciting to be working on a project that could resurrect this site and turn it back into an automotive centre." The former factory on the east side of Walker was built more than 25 years ago and has been vacant for over a decade. In the future, Dramon has plans for a convention and trade centre which could accommodate automotive, RV and boat shows, provided he gets all the municipal approvals required. "When you hold these shows at a mall, the dealers are never sure how many serious customers they'll attract," he said. "But if you have a show at a location such as ours, you'll get the serious lookers and in a space where you could display so many more different products." In addition to trade shows, Darmon is also working with the Windsor Area Street Rod Association to move its Canadian meeting and show indoors from Malden Park because "you can't always rely on the weather. "If we can pull this off, it's tentatively set for May 18 and would attract around 300 cars as well as engine and chassis builders," said Darmon. Article Credit |
