On a campus that occupies 125 acres, with over 16,000 full-time and part-time students, some of the finest educational facilities in the country blend with historical landmarks dating back to 1857 and the original Assumption College. Seven residences accommodate 1,800 students. St. Denis Athletic and Community Centre provides 75,000 sq. ft. of athletic and auditorium facilities. The University of Windsor is made up of nine faculties. The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research has 51 Masters and Doctoral programs. Students participate in research programs by the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research in the areas of environmental chemistry and toxicology, and conservation/resource management; by the Research Centre for Integrated Microsystems in the field of microelectronics and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS); and by the Fluid Dynamics Research Institute which provides training for graduate students in all aspects of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. The University of Windsor's newest addition is the $24 million Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry and plans are underway for a $110 million Centre of Engineering Innovation (CEI). The CEI will represent a new approach to engineering, bringing industry partners directly to faculty and students to operate research and development and co-op programs. The concept known as a "manufacturing courtyard" will bring industry and academia into much closer contact on a daily basis, to the benefit of both. No other Canadian university can match Windsor's facilities and researchers in support of the automotive industry. Five of the University's 15 Canada Research Chairs focus on research involving the automotive industry. In 2001, the University of Windsor was selected to lead Auto 21 - the Automobile of the 21st Century, the largest of four major research and development projects set up under the federal government's National Network of Centres of Excellence program. Auto 21 involves a consortium of 27 universities carrying 28 automotive research projects.

St. Clair College of Applied Arts and TechnologyEstablished in 1966, St. Clair College is well regarded for a wide variety of superior skills training programs. The College provides training opportunities and, when possible, on-site work experience in careers ranging from Mechanical Engineering Technician to Industrial General Machinist. Today, the College has eight Schools of Specialization offering 85 programs including: Community Studies, Health Sciences, Creative Arts, Business, Engineering & Manufacturing Technology, Applied Arts & Science, Building, Design & Construction Technology, and Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship. In 2002, the College was given degree-granting status and now offers a four-year Bachelor Degree in Applied Technology - Industrial Management that delivers a combination applied learning and theory to prepare students for a rewarding management career in the manufacturing sector. The Corporate and Professional Training Department works closely with industry to meet specific training needs and to assist in the short and long-term planning process. The College draws on both faculty and external consultants in the development and delivery of post-secondary training, continuing education, contract training to industry and re-training tailored to specific market needs. To enhance this service, the College provides facilities for common training as well as new technology demonstration and training. St. Clair College attracts approximately 6,200 full-time and 15,300 part-time post-secondary students. The college's first residence, a 408-bed facility, opened in September 2002.

Elementary & Secondary
Windsor-Essex Catholic Board named among the best in Ontario. According to the 2008 study released by the C.D. Howe Institute, the local
board is among the 13 best in the province.
The vast majority of elementary and secondary school students attend publicly-funded schools. The Ministry of Education administers the system of publicly funded elementary and secondary school education in Ontario, in accordance with the directions set by the provincial government. Catholic education is also publicly funded in Ontario. Students must complete standardized testing in most grades up to and including grade ten. Successful completion of a standardized literacy test in Grade 10 is one of the thirty-two requirements leading to an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The majority of elementary and secondary school students in Regional Schools achieved standardized test scores that are at or above the provincial standard for reading, writing and mathematics. Some secondary schools provide specialized programs for students; for example, the Specialist High Skills Major is a new opportunity within the Ontario Secondary School Diploma to allow students to pursue programs in specific areas of concentration that lead to workplace, apprenticeship training, college or university. The Greater Essex County District School Board is one of several school boards in the province to launch this program. The focus of the program is in the manufacturing sector with courses offered at General Amherst, Herman and Sandwich Secondary schools. Another specialized program is the Walkerville Centre for Creative Arts (WCCA), a program for visual and performing arts students in the Windsor-Essex Region operating from Walkerville Collegiate. Located in the City of Windsor is Académie Ste. Cécile International School. A private school providing elementary and secondary education, Ste. Cécile is affiliated with the International Baccalaureate Organization and prepares students for the world recognized International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB Diploma). Assumption High School (part of the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board) also offers the IB Diploma program.

French Language EducationGovernment-funded elementary and secondary education is available in both of Canada's official languages: English and French. Catholic elementary and secondary french education is provided by Conseil scolaire de district des écoles catholiques du Sud-Ouest and public education is provided by Conseil scolaire de district du Centre-Sud-Ouest, both directed towards French-speaking families. French Immersion Programs, aimed more at English-speaking families, are provided by both the Greater Essex County District School Board and the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board at a number of elementary and the secondary schools across the Region.

Education FactsOver 47% of the Region's population aged 15 years and over have at least some post-secondary education, and over 17% have a university degree. The most common field of study for those with post-secondary education was Architecture, Engineering and related Technologies, with over a 1/4 of the population focusing their studies in this field.
