Safety

The Windsor-Essex Region is a very safe place to live, work, and raise a family.

Emergency Services

Ambulance: The County of Essex Ambulance Service is committed to providing the highest quality of Emergency Medical Services to the citizens of the County of Essex, the City of Windsor and the Township of Pelee.

Fire: All the Municipalities in the Windsor-Essex Region have their own fire departments, all of whom are committed to ensuring our communities, residents, and visitors are fire safe.

Police: There are three levels of Policing in Canada: Municipal, Provincial, and Federal:

  • Municipal: The communities in the Windsor-Essex Region have established their own municipal policing services, or rely on the Ontario Provincial Police with officers that are expertly trained to handle all types of occurrences, ensuring the safety of the communities they serve.
  • Provincial: On the Provincial level, the Ontario Provincial Police are committed to ensuring community safety and provincial security. The OPP places a significant emphasis on services related to community-level policing and to traffic safety, and is one of North America's largest deployed police services with more than 5,400 uniformed officers, 2,000 civilian employees and 850 Auxiliary Officers.
  • Federal: At the Federal Level, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is the Canadian national police service, and an agency of the Ministry of Public Safety Canada. The RCMP provides a total federal policing service to all Canadians and policing services under contract to the three territories, eight provinces (except Ontario and Quebec), and more than 190 municipalities.

Crime

Crime rates in the Windsor-Essex Region are comparable to any other southwestern Ontario community of similar size and much lower than the greater Toronto area!

The Windsor-Essex Region also has a Crime Stoppers Program in place; this group develops programs and activities in order to solicit information from anonymous callers which will solve crime and prevent criminal activities in society.

Public Safety & Emergency Management

The Emergency Management Coordination function works with Municipalities to prepare for large-scale emergencies as a means of minimizing the risk to the life and health of residents and to reduce damage to property. The organization works on (i) plan maintenance; (ii) plan testing; (iii) training; (iv) public awareness; (v) county-wide workshops; (vi) disaster response, recovery and assistance, and (vii) coordination of emergency planning related functions.

The City of Windsor's Fire Chief (Dave Fields) is the Emergency Management Coordinator, along with an alternate, and works to assist the City's Emergency Management Program Committee with the development, implementation and maintenance of emergency management programs in the city. www.windsorfire.com
