R&D Jobs

Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009

Two multi-million-dollar projects in Windsor have a lot in common. They're both employing environmentally "green" designs, creating jobs and pumping money into the local economy. They're also helping to position the city as a leader in the field of research and technology.

That's certainly good news at a time when this community is striving to diversify and reinvent itself.  Even better is the fact a private entrepreneur has taken the plunge and invested here.

OYA Solar Inc. thinks Windsor is the ideal location for a $180-million rooftop solar energy project that will create 75 to 100 direct and indirect jobs. "Everything we need is right here," said managing partner Manish Nayar, citing our ideal climate and skilled workforce. The company has already brought local businesses on board, creating a welcome synergy.

The project takes advantage of the province's new Green Energy Act, and Patrick Persichilli, acting CEO of the WindsorEssex Development Commission, believes the spinoffs are great.

"We believe we have an excellent opportunity to position Windsor as the hub for renewable energy technology and research across North America," he said when the news was announced.

At the same time, local company PCR Contractors won the bid to build the new $112-million University of Windsor Centre for Engineering Innovation. The environmentally friendly project will create 1,600 jobs, inject $270 million into the local economy and attract as many as 1,800 engineering students to the area each year.

"It's a really exciting project," said U of W president Alan Wildeman. "It brings together the very best in education, in research, in engaging industries."

That's precisely the combination Windsor and Essex County need to create new opportunities to diversify.
